Oil Spill Response
In the best of conditions, recovering spilled oil is difficult. A response effort is considered successful if 20 percent of the spilled oil is recovered. Remote Arctic conditions and severe weather may present spill responders with total darkness, extreme storms, sub-zero temperatures and shifting ice. There may be days or even weeks when weather prevents any cleanup efforts. In addition to these hazardous operating conditions, the cold and icy Arctic environment hampers the best technology available for spill response. If oil is spilled into the Arctic Ocean, recovering it will a difficult, if not impossible, task.
- Mechanical recovery: Oil is contained in an area using boom or natural containment and removed using skimmers and pumps.
- Non-mechanical recovery: Use of chemical dispersants, burning, or bioremediation, where natural processes degrade or disperse an oil slick.
- Manual recovery: Oil is removed using simple hand tools and pails, shovels or nets.

How to Address U.S. Arctic Science Needs
The Pew Environment Group and Ocean Conservancy recently released a white paper in which 14 independent Arctic marine scientists reviewed and reinforced the recommendations of a USGS Arctic science gap analysis. The white paper also recommends concrete steps the Obama administration should take to address science gaps and inform conservation and development decisions in America’s Arctic Ocean.
VIDEO: Don't Put America's Arctic Ocean at Risk
The oil industry recently submitted exploration plans to drill up to 10 wells over the next two summers in the U.S. Arctic Ocean for review by the Department of the Interior. As the video below shows, to allow drilling now would put this extraordinary ecosystem—and vibrant communities that have practiced a traditional way of life for thousands of years—at risk.
