More Than 500 Scientists Say...
Base Arctic Ocean Drilling Decisions On
Science, Not Politics
President Obama:
In a letter on January 23, more than 500 distinguished scientists from around the world urged you to delay new oil and gas activity in the U.S. Arctic Ocean until the research recommendations of your own U.S. Geological Survey scientists are addressed. Already stressed by rapidly melting summer ice, the whales, walrus, ice seals, polar bears, and other wildlife in these waters are especially vulnerable to oil spills and industrial activity. We need to know more about this fragile ecosystem, and also have spill prevention and response capabilities in place that can stand up to the extreme conditions of the Arctic, before drilling is allowed in these waters.
Stand by your commitment to scientific integrity.
